After a brief pause, farmers resumed their “Dilli Chalo” protest at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana on Sunday, demanding legal guarantees for Minimum Support Price (MSP) and other agricultural reforms. However, their march was disrupted by police, who used tear gas to stop them. The group, under the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha banners, has been pressing for a range of demands, including loan waivers, pension schemes, and justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
On Friday, a group of 101 farmers had also attempted to march toward Delhi but was blocked by multilayered barricades and faced tear gas shelling, leading to injuries among some protesters. The farmers suspended that march but announced they would resume the protest if the government failed to engage in talks by December 7. As a result, Sunday’s march was launched but again halted shortly after it began, with several farmers injured due to police action.
Amid heightened security, the Haryana government enforced a mobile internet and bulk SMS ban in 11 Ambala villages to curb communication during the protests. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated that the group would persist until their demands were addressed, criticizing the government for its lack of dialogue. The protesters have been camping at the border since February, highlighting long-standing grievances over agricultural policies and rural neglect.
