The Supreme Court has extended its stay on illegal bulldozer demolitions across the country, including those of properties belonging to individuals accused of crimes. The court reserved its judgment after hearing a batch of pleas alleging unauthorized demolitions by several states. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta represented the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
The court previously observed that even one instance of illegal demolition goes against the Constitution’s ethos. The stay, initially set to expire on October 1, has been extended until further notice. Notably, the court denied interventions, including one from the UN Special Rapporteur, who deemed punitive demolition of homes and shops an “aggravated” human rights violation.
