Telangana MLC and former AIMIM leader Mirza Rahmath Baig has urged the public not to believe what he described as a campaign to defame him through AI-generated deepfake videos and morphed content. Addressing the media in Hyderabad, Baig said he approached the police after receiving threats and blackmail attempts following his expulsion from the party. He stated that the investigation has already led to the arrest of six people, while police continue searching for other suspects allegedly involved in the conspiracy.
Baig alleged that the accused created fake videos using artificial intelligence in an attempt to extort money and damage his public image. Expressing confidence in the ongoing investigation, he said the truth would emerge through legal proceedings and appealed to people not to be misled by misinformation circulating on social media. He also claimed that attempts had been made to target other public representatives using AI-generated content and asserted that those responsible would eventually be exposed. During the press conference, Baig displayed videos that he said had been sent to him by the alleged blackmailers.
The case stems from a complaint filed by Baig on October 12, in which he alleged that unknown individuals demanded Rs 5 crore while threatening to release morphed photographs and deepfake videos portraying him in an objectionable manner. Police have so far arrested six accused in connection with the alleged extortion racket, while several others named in the FIR remain absconding. Authorities have stated that the investigation is continuing to identify all those involved and determine the full extent of the alleged deepfake and blackmail operation.
