Kerala-Born Nithya Raman Creates History with Los Angeles Mayoral Victory

Kerala-born Nithya Raman has created history by winning the Los Angeles mayoral election, becoming the city’s 44th mayor and the first South Asian American to hold the prestigious office. Congratulating her on the landmark achievement, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan described the victory as a proud moment for the state and the global Malayali community. In a message shared on social media, he praised Raman’s remarkable journey from Kerala to one of America’s most influential public offices, calling her success an inspiration for aspiring leaders around the world.

Raman, a member of the Los Angeles City Council representing District 4, defeated incumbent Karen Bass in the November 3 election after a closely watched campaign. An urban planner by profession, she completed her bachelor’s degree at Harvard University and later earned a graduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her background in urban planning and public service has been widely credited with shaping her leadership style and commitment to addressing issues such as housing, infrastructure, and community development in Los Angeles.

Her victory also marks another milestone for the growing political influence of Indian Americans and South Asian Americans in the United States. With Raman’s election, both Los Angeles and New York City are now led by mayors of South Asian descent, reflecting increasing representation in American politics. Organizations representing the Indian-American community hailed the result as a significant step forward, noting that California’s large South Asian population continues to play an increasingly important role in the state’s political landscape.
