Students of Jamia Millia Islamia have continued their protest even after the university shifted academic activities online. During virtual classes, many students changed their profile pictures to messages such as “Restore JMISU” and “Respect My Existence or Expect My Resistance” while raising slogans demanding the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU). The university has extended online classes until November 24, citing the prevailing campus situation and concerns over student safety.
According to the revised academic schedule, practicals, fieldwork, projects, viva examinations, and minor project assessments will be conducted online from November 25 to November 30. End-semester theory examinations are scheduled to take place online between December 1 and December 24, followed by winter vacation from December 25 to January 12, 2027. Despite the university’s assurance that student union elections will be held after the union constitution receives approval, four students on an indefinite hunger strike have refused to end their agitation, insisting that elections be restored after remaining suspended since 2006.
Meanwhile, the university has issued a show-cause notice to a female resident of Begum Hazrat Mahal Girls’ Hostel, alleging that she obtained emergency leave on misleading grounds to participate in the protest. She has been asked to submit a written explanation within 24 hours, with the university warning that disciplinary action may follow if her response is found unsatisfactory. At the same time, hostel authorities have instructed residents to vacate the hostel as academic activities continue online, a decision that has drawn criticism and concern from protesting students.
