Residents across several south-western parts of Hyderabad were gripped by panic on Tuesday morning after a powerful explosion-like sound was followed by noticeable ground vibrations. The incident occurred at around 10:25 a.m., with people in Rajendranagar, Attapur, Upparpally, Langar Houz, Keshavswamy Nagar, and nearby localities reporting that the ground shook for nearly five to ten seconds. Many frightened residents rushed out of their homes as windows rattled, household utensils shifted, and the loud booming noise created fears that an earthquake or a major explosion had struck the area.
Scientists from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) quickly clarified that the event was not caused by a destructive tectonic earthquake. According to experts, the tremors were most likely linked to a localized geological phenomenon known as hydro seismicity. They explained that after prolonged or intense rainfall, water can seep deep into microscopic fractures within Hyderabad’s granite rock formations. As pressure builds underground, the sudden release of trapped water and air through tiny rock fractures can generate a loud sound and brief surface vibrations. Because granite efficiently transmits acoustic and kinetic energy, even a minor underground rupture can appear much more dramatic than it actually is.
Authorities said preliminary inspections found no reports of fatalities, injuries, or significant structural damage. Disaster management officials urged residents not to panic or spread unverified information, emphasizing that Hyderabad is located on a stable granite shield where the likelihood of a major earthquake remains extremely low. Experts also noted that similar micro-tremor incidents have been recorded in nearby areas during previous years, including events in 2020 and earlier this year, making such localized geological activity uncommon but not unprecedented. Officials continue to monitor the situation while reassuring the public that there is currently no indication of a larger seismic threat.
