Jamia Millia Islamia Announces Students’ Union Elections, Revokes Action Against Protesters

Jamia Millia Islamia has announced that Students’ Union elections will be conducted within 15 days of the approval of the union’s constitution, marking a significant breakthrough after nearly two weeks of student protests. The university has also withdrawn suspension and show-cause notices issued to students during the agitation and decided to set up a committee to investigate the conduct of security personnel during the protest period. The decision follows discussions between the university administration and student representatives who had been staging a hunger strike.

According to the university’s official order, the protesting students have agreed to publicly apologize for defamatory statements and social media posts made against the administration during the agitation. They have also agreed to remove the disputed posts from social media immediately. In return, the administration will revoke disciplinary measures related to the protest, and the ongoing demonstration is expected to end following the issuance of the order.

The protests were driven by demands for the restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU), whose elections have not been held since 2006. Students had insisted on a clear election timeline, the withdrawal of disciplinary action, and an inquiry into the alleged conduct of security staff. With the latest announcement, the university has provided a definite election schedule linked to the approval of the union constitution, offering a major step toward resolving the long-standing dispute between the administration and the students.
