Mumbai Police have issued a notice to actor Imran Khan, directing him to leave India by October 28 over an alleged violation of the Immigration and Foreigners Act. According to police officials, the action was initiated after the actor participated in an anti-Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) protest held at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on October 10, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Imran Khan was briefly detained during the protest, and authorities later launched suo motu proceedings, stating that his participation in political activities was inconsistent with the conditions of his visa.
Police officials said that Imran Khan is a foreign citizen and not an Indian national, making him subject to restrictions under the Immigration and Foreigners Act. They stated that foreign nationals are prohibited from participating in political protests or political activities in India. A senior officer confirmed that a formal notice has been served to the actor, instructing him to leave the country by October 28, while additional administrative procedures are currently underway. Authorities maintain that the action is based on existing legal provisions governing the conduct of foreign nationals staying in India.
The issue gained political attention after former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya sought action against the actor for participating in the demonstration. Somaiya welcomed the police’s decision, arguing that foreign citizens must strictly comply with Indian immigration laws. The protest itself was organised to demand the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, and Imran Khan’s presence at the event became the focus of legal scrutiny. Police have not announced any further criminal proceedings at this stage, but said the matter will continue to be handled under the applicable provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act.
