Delhi Police Removes Jantar Mantar as Official Protest Venue, Names Three New Locations

The Delhi Police has officially removed Jantar Mantar from the list of designated protest venues and announced three new locations where public demonstrations and protest gatherings will now be permitted. According to an official statement issued on Monday, the decision follows recommendations made by a committee constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs to identify more suitable places for conducting protests in the national capital. The newly designated venues are Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground in East Delhi. Police said the move is a partial modification of the earlier Standing Order issued in April 2022 and forms part of a broader review of protest management in Delhi.

Authorities also stated that a revised Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) governing the organisation of protests at the newly designated venues will be released separately. The updated guidelines are expected to outline the procedures, permissions, security arrangements, and responsibilities for organisers conducting demonstrations at these locations. Officials believe the revised framework will help regulate public gatherings more effectively while ensuring that law and order is maintained during protests. No detailed timeline has yet been announced for the release of the new SOP.

The decision comes at a time of heightened security in Delhi, where multiple political protests and demonstrations have been planned in recent days. Jantar Mantar has historically served as one of the capital’s most prominent sites for peaceful public protests and demonstrations by political parties, student groups, and civil society organisations. With the designation now withdrawn, future protests requiring official permission will be directed to the newly identified venues. The announcement is expected to have a significant impact on how public demonstrations are organised in the national capital, particularly amid ongoing political agitations and increased security measures.
