The Congress on Tuesday intensified its attack on the Centre and the Election Commission, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Following a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) chaired by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, the party also sought the immediate suspension of the SIR exercise and restoration of more than 13.30 crore names it claimed had been removed from the electoral rolls.
Addressing the media after the meeting, senior Congress leaders alleged that elections in the country were no longer being conducted in a fair and transparent manner. The CWC resolution accused the Election Commission of compromising its institutional independence and alleged that the SIR process had raised serious concerns regarding the integrity and constitutional validity of the electoral rolls. The party warned that it would continue its agitation in Parliament, the courts and on the streets until its demands were addressed.
The developments come amid reports that two Election Commissioners had reportedly raised objections to several decisions related to the SIR process. Responding to the controversy, the Election Commission maintained that differing opinions are a normal part of institutional decision-making and asserted that all its orders have full legal sanction and are issued in accordance with established statutory procedures. Meanwhile, the Congress has announced that it will continue pressing for accountability over the electoral revision process.
