Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, was found dead at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday, sending shockwaves through the police department and government circles. According to preliminary information, police suspect the incident to be a case of suicide, with officials stating that Dhankar is believed to have used his service pistol. He was immediately taken to Govind Ballabh Pant (GB) Hospital, where doctors made extensive efforts to revive him before declaring him dead.

Hospital officials said Dhankar was brought to the emergency department around noon without any signs of life. Doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for more than 40 minutes, but were unable to save him. Authorities have stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, and officials are examining all available evidence as part of the inquiry.

Anurag Dhankar had taken charge as Tripura’s Director General of Police in May 2025 after succeeding Amitabh Ranjan. Before becoming the state’s police chief, he served as Director General (Intelligence) in Tripura and had previously worked with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), where he was associated with several high-profile investigations. His sudden death has left colleagues and senior officials deeply saddened, while the state administration awaits the findings of the ongoing investigation and post-mortem report.
