A 12-year-old boy lost his life and two of his family members were injured after a portion of a neighbouring building collapsed onto their house in Maharashtra’s Thane district on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred at Madras Chawl in Azad Nagar, Brahmand, when part of the gallery of a 25 to 30-year-old ground-plus-one-storey building suddenly gave way and crashed onto the adjoining home where the family was resting. Emergency teams rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation.
The deceased was identified as Jaykumar Jaiswal, who suffered severe injuries in the collapse and was taken to a nearby civil hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Two other family members, Urmila Jaiswal, 35, and nine-year-old Vinit Jaiswal, sustained head injuries and were admitted to Titan Hospital in Manpada for treatment. Authorities said their condition is being closely monitored while rescue and debris removal operations continued at the site.
Following the incident, officials evacuated three nearby houses as a precaution and initiated structural inspections to assess the safety of surrounding buildings. Fire services, disaster management teams, the Public Works Department, and local civic authorities participated in the rescue operation. The tragedy comes just days after another fatal building collapse in Mumbai during heavy rainfall, raising fresh concerns over the safety of ageing structures across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, especially during the monsoon season.
