A tragic explosion at Qatar’s Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas (LNG) complex has claimed the lives of 13 workers, including 12 Indian nationals, while 66 others sustained injuries. The blast occurred at the Barzan gas supply facility within Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar’s largest LNG production and export hub. Qatari authorities described the incident as a technical accident and have launched a formal investigation to determine its cause.
Qatar’s Energy Minister and QatarEnergy CEO Saad Al-Kaabi confirmed that the victims were Indian and Pakistani nationals. He expressed deep condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and stated that all injured individuals are receiving medical treatment, with none reported to be in critical condition. The explosion was powerful enough to be felt more than 70 kilometers away in Doha, where residents reported shaking windows and moments of panic.
Despite the severity of the incident, Qatari officials emphasized that there is no environmental danger and that the country’s LNG export operations remain unaffected. According to Al-Kaabi, the facility had been shut down since December 2025 for urgent maintenance and had resumed operations only two days before the explosion. The Indian Embassy in Doha has expressed condolences to the bereaved families and is working closely with Qatari authorities to provide assistance, including the early repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased to India.
