Tensions Escalate in Manipur as Protesters Block Key Highway, Security Forces Use Tear Gas

Imphal: A tense situation unfolded in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on Friday after security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse protesters who had blocked a crucial stretch of National Highway 202. The protest was organized by residents of Shangkai village, who were enforcing a shutdown in the area over allegations that 14 members of their community were being held hostage by Naga groups. The blockade disrupted traffic on the vital route connecting Imphal with the Ukhrul district headquarters.

According to officials, demonstrators placed large stone boulders, tree trunks, and other obstacles across the highway, preventing the movement of vehicles, essential supplies, and security personnel. As tensions increased, security forces intervened and fired multiple rounds of tear gas to clear the road and restore normal traffic movement. The incident led to clashes between protesters and authorities, further escalating concerns over law and order in the region.

At least five women sustained minor injuries during the confrontation and were provided first aid by security personnel at the scene. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as efforts continue to resolve the dispute and prevent further disruptions. National Highway 202 is considered a lifeline for the district, making the blockade a significant concern for residents, businesses, and security agencies operating in the area.
