Telangana Shuts Down Over BC Quota Row: Political Unity, Public Disruption, and Deepawali Chaos

Telangana witnessed a complete shutdown on Saturday as the statewide bandh over the High Court’s stay on 42% BC reservation in local body polls gained massive momentum. From early morning, protests erupted across Hyderabad and several districts, with buses stranded in major depots like MGBS, Rathifile, and Amberpet. The bandh—backed by Congress, BRS, BJP, and Telangana Jagruthi—crippled public transport and forced educational institutions and businesses to declare a holiday. Protesters demanded immediate legal action to restore the quota, accusing successive governments of neglecting the backward classes despite repeated assurances.

The agitation saw prominent faces from all major parties taking to the streets. Telangana Jagruthi chief K. Kavitha and her son Aditya led a human chain protest at Khairatabad, chanting slogans demanding justice for BCs. Former minister Srinivas Goud, BJP’s Eatala Rajender, and senior Congress leader V. Hanumantha Rao were also spotted at multiple protest sites—Rao even slipping during a demonstration but quickly resuming the march. The rare political unity underscored the intensity of the issue, with all sides attempting to display solidarity with BC communities while trading blame for legislative inaction.

Meanwhile, Deepawali celebrations turned bleak for many citizens in Hyderabad as the transport standstill stranded thousands planning to travel to their hometowns. Bus services were halted, and private cab operators allegedly doubled fares, leaving passengers—including families with children—helpless at bus stops. Visuals of crowds waiting under the scorching sun flooded social media, reflecting public frustration. Police Chief B. Shivadhar Reddy urged for peaceful protests, warning of strict action against any violence or damage. As Telangana stands still, the BC reservation debate has once again exposed the deep-rooted cracks in state governance and the politics of social justice.
