A tragic accident in the national capital claimed the life of Navjot Singh, a 52-year-old Deputy Secretary in the Union Finance Ministry, when a BMW SUV collided with his motorcycle near the Delhi Cantonment metro station on Sunday afternoon. His wife, Sandeep Kaur, and two others sustained injuries in the crash. Police and eyewitnesses reported that the luxury vehicle, driven by a woman from Gurugram, rammed the motorcycle from behind, causing Singh to collapse on the road. Despite being rushed to hospital, Singh succumbed to his injuries, while his wife continues to undergo treatment for head and leg injuries.

The accident triggered outrage after the victim’s family alleged negligence in both the handling of the collision and subsequent medical care. Singh’s son told reporters that his parents were first taken to a hospital nearly 22 kilometres away from the crash site, despite his mother’s repeated pleas to be admitted to a nearby facility. In her statement, Sandeep Kaur alleged that the accused couple ignored their requests, further delaying urgent treatment. She also recounted how she was left in a hospital lobby in pain while the BMW driver’s husband, who suffered minor injuries, was admitted promptly. The family has blamed this delay for Singh’s death, describing it as preventable.

Delhi Police confirmed that the BMW driver, identified as Gagan Preet Kaur, was discharged from hospital on Monday and immediately taken into custody. A case has been registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, and causing disappearance of evidence. Both vehicles involved have been seized, and forensic experts are assisting in the investigation. The crash caused a brief traffic jam near Dhaula Kuan, but movement was restored after the wreckage was cleared. The incident has reignited public anger over reckless driving in Delhi, as well as concerns about accountability and privilege in high-profile accident cases.
