Hyderabad: The city is bracing for another spell of heavy rainfall on Friday night, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) cautioning residents to remain alert and plan their movements carefully. On Thursday, several parts of Telangana were battered by intense rains, with Mallampalli in Mulugu recording 217 mm and Karimnagar’s Indurthy receiving 211.3 mm. Within the GHMC limits, Hayathnagar topped the rainfall charts with 115 mm, raising concerns of waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Weather enthusiasts, including T Balaji, have also predicted isolated showers during the day, followed by scattered, intense rains in the night.
The situation has already begun to affect city life, particularly in areas adjoining the Musi river. After the gates of Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar were lifted on September 11, heavy inflows caused the Musi to overflow, flooding the 100-foot road at Bahadurpura West. As a result, traffic movement between Purana Pul and Jiyaguda Kamela Road has been suspended, with diversions put in place via Karwan, Ziaguda, and Gopi Hotel. The overflowing river has once again highlighted the vulnerability of low-lying areas in Hyderabad to seasonal floods, raising fears of further damage if rains intensify overnight.
Beyond Hyderabad, several districts of Telangana have reported alarming rainfall levels. In Karimnagar, Huzurabad received 221.5 mm, while Chigurumamidi recorded 215 mm and Saidapur 149.2 mm. Floodwaters even entered a school building in Saidapur, causing hardships for students. Looking ahead, the IMD has forecasted light to moderate rains till September 16, with heavier spells expected on September 13. Districts including Rangareddy, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Vikarabad, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Nalgonda, Adilabad, Asifabad, Nirmal, and Mancherial are all expected to witness intense showers in the coming hours, keeping authorities on high alert.
