Torrential overnight rainfall has caused widespread devastation across Kerala’s Kottayam district, triggering landslides, flash floods, and severe waterlogging in several towns. A woman lost her life after a landslide struck a house in Poonjar, while rescue teams continue searching for another missing person. Floodwaters submerged roads, houses, and commercial areas in Erattupetta, Koottickal, Mundakkayam, Kanjirappally, Erumeli, and nearby regions, forcing hundreds of residents to move to safer locations. Authorities said rivers including the Manimala and Pullakayar overflowed after continuous heavy rainfall, disrupting transport and isolating several areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kottayam, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and the possibility of further flooding and landslides. District officials have urged people living near riverbanks and in landslide-prone hilly areas to remain vigilant and immediately follow evacuation orders if issued. Fire Force personnel, police, local authorities, and volunteers have been carrying out rescue operations, helping stranded residents reach safety. Six relief camps have been opened so far, with officials prepared to establish more if conditions worsen.

District Collector Chetan Kumar Meena said emergency response teams are working round the clock to coordinate rescue and relief efforts. Senior officials and local representatives are visiting the worst-affected regions to assess the damage and ensure timely assistance reaches affected families. The district administration has also activated 24-hour control rooms at the Collectorate and all taluk headquarters to monitor the situation. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in hilly regions and near rivers, until weather conditions improve.
