1,300+ Global Artists Boycott Israeli Institutions in Solidarity with Palestine

Over 1,300 artists worldwide, including Hollywood A-listers like Mark Ruffalo, Olivia Colman, Riz Ahmed, Tilda Swinton, and Javier Bardem, have announced that they will boycott Israeli cultural and film institutions over the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The artists signed a collective pledge refusing to work with Israeli festivals, broadcasters, and production houses that they believe are complicit in the apartheid system against Palestinians. Their statement condemned the “unrelenting horror” in Gaza, where over 64,000 Palestinians — mostly women and children — have been killed by Israeli forces.

This marks a significant shift in Hollywood’s stance, which historically leaned pro-Israel. The move draws inspiration from past cultural resistance, such as the Filmmakers United Against Apartheid movement during South Africa’s apartheid era. Several artists have already faced professional consequences for their pro-Palestine stance, including Susan Sarandon, who lost her talent agency contract in 2023, and Melissa Barrera, who was removed from the hit Scream franchise for her social media posts critical of Israel. Despite risks to their careers, more celebrities are openly supporting the Palestinian cause.

The growing momentum comes at a time when Palestinian stories are gaining global recognition. Just last week, The Voice of Hind Rajab — a film about a six-year-old Palestinian girl killed in Gaza — received a 23-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. This wave of solidarity from the global arts community signals a cultural turning point, amplifying calls for governments to stop backing Israel’s military actions and urging the world to recognize the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
