Violence Erupts in Madhya Pradesh After Cricket Victory Celebration Near Mosque

Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, witnessed violent clashes on Sunday night after a Hindu mob celebrating India’s Champions Trophy victory allegedly shouted Islamophobic slogans and set off firecrackers outside Jama Masjid, disrupting Tarawih prayers. According to the mosque’s Imam, Mohammed Javed, the situation escalated when unidentified individuals threw rope bombs, causing smoke and panic among worshippers. The disturbance quickly spread to nearby areas, including Manek Chowk, Sewa Marg, Market Chowk, and Rajesh Mohalla, leading to widespread chaos. Several vehicles were torched, and properties vandalized, as tensions between the groups intensified.

Law enforcement authorities responded with tear gas and lathi charges to bring the situation under control. Indore (Rural) Superintendent of Police Hitika Vasal confirmed that the violence erupted following a dispute over the celebratory procession outside the mosque. She urged residents to refrain from believing in misinformation and assured that adequate security forces had been deployed to prevent further escalation. Indore Collector Ashish Singh also called for calm, stating that peace had been restored and that strict action would be taken against those responsible for inciting violence. Officials continue to monitor the affected areas, emphasizing that any attempts to spread communal discord will be dealt with firmly.

Madhya Pradesh Minister Tulsiram Silawat reiterated that those guilty of instigating violence would face legal consequences, regardless of their affiliations. The incident has sparked concerns over rising communal tensions in the state, especially during religious and national celebrations. Political leaders and community representatives have urged restraint and dialogue to prevent further clashes. As investigations proceed, authorities are working to identify individuals involved in the violence and ensure accountability.
