Valley Unites in Rare Shutdown Against Pahalgam Terror Attack After 35 Years

In a rare display of collective protest, Kashmir valley witnessed a complete shutdown on Wednesday — the first in 35 years — following the brutal terror attack at the Pahalgam tourist resort in south Kashmir. The strike was widely supported by traders, transporters, civil society groups, and religious organisations, who condemned the killings of at least 26 individuals, mostly tourists, and injuries to many more. Srinagar’s iconic Lal Chowk and several marketplaces wore a deserted look, as shops, fuel stations, and businesses remained shut. Only essential services continued, and public transport was scarce, though private vehicles moved freely. Private schools also observed closure, while government schools remained open.

The call for shutdown found resonance across political and religious lines. Peaceful protests were held in many parts of the valley, with demonstrators demanding an end to violence and innocent bloodshed. Political outfits like the National Conference, PDP, Apni Party, and Peoples’ Conference extended their support. Mutahida Majlis Ulema (MMU), led by Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, urged the public to observe the bandh in solidarity with the victims. Trade bodies, including the Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries and the Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation, also backed the strike. As a mark of respect, the Private Schools’ Association of J&K (PSAJK) declared a holiday for all private institutions.

Security was significantly heightened throughout the valley, especially in tourist hotspots and sensitive areas. University examinations were postponed, and additional forces were deployed across entry and exit points. Multiple check-posts were established for vehicle and ID checks, while search operations continued in Baisaran, the site of the attack, in an effort to nab the perpetrators. Authorities maintained a tight vigil at major locations, reaffirming that such terror strikes will not deter the region’s pursuit of peace. The people’s unified response marked a powerful statement of resilience and condemnation against terrorism.
