Uttarakhand Student Brutally Beaten for His Faith, Battles for Life Without Medical Aid

In a chilling reminder of rising hate crimes, a 22-year-old Muslim youth named Mubeen was brutally assaulted by a mob near Gurukul Kangri University in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, on June 26. The assailants, allegedly 8 to 10 in number, attacked him with sticks after learning about his religious identity. Mubeen, a resident of Jwalapur, sustained severe injuries in the targeted attack and was rushed to a government hospital before being referred to a private facility due to the seriousness of his condition.

Mubeen’s father, Mujeeb, told local reporters that he had no choice but to bring his son home from the private hospital due to financial constraints. Unfortunately, the young man’s condition has worsened since, and he now urgently requires further medical treatment. The family is pleading for assistance as they struggle to afford the critical care needed to save Mubeen’s life.

Despite an FIR being registered, there has been no concrete action taken against the attackers so far. Local activists and civil society groups have condemned the police inaction and are calling for justice. They argue that the law-and-order situation in Uttarakhand—currently governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party—has deteriorated, particularly for minority communities. The incident has sparked fresh concerns over rising intolerance and mob violence in the region.
