Tragic End: Software Engineer Dies by Suicide Over Dowry Harassment in Hyderabad

Hyderabad witnessed another heart-wrenching case of dowry harassment as a 35-year-old software engineer, Devika, ended her life by hanging herself at her residence in Prashanthi Hills under Raidurgam police station limits. The incident, which occurred on March 2, came to light the next morning when her husband, Satish, discovered her body and informed the police. Devika had been married to Satish for just six months, and their wedding had taken place in Goa. However, tensions had been brewing in their marriage, allegedly due to constant dowry-related harassment. Her mother filed a police complaint, accusing Satish of tormenting her daughter over financial demands.

Authorities have registered a case and shifted Devika’s body to Osmania Hospital for postmortem. The police are conducting an in-depth investigation to ascertain the extent of dowry-related harassment and any other factors that may have contributed to her tragic decision. This case highlights the continuing menace of dowry demands in modern society, where even educated, independent women face unbearable pressure. Just ten days before this incident, a similar case surfaced where a 24-year-old woman, Manisha, from Suryapet district, died by suicide due to alleged harassment from her husband, Sampath, a Hyderabad-based lab technician.

These back-to-back incidents serve as grim reminders of the deep-rooted social evil that continues to claim innocent lives. Despite legal provisions against dowry, its enforcement remains weak, leaving many women trapped in toxic marital environments. Activists are calling for stricter legal action and societal reform to eradicate this practice. Meanwhile, the police urge families to report dowry harassment early to prevent such tragic outcomes. Further developments in both cases are awaited as investigations progress.
