Chandigarh, May 30: A devastating explosion ripped through a firecracker manufacturing and packaging unit near Singhawali-Kotli Road in Sri Muktsar Sahib district of Punjab on Friday, leaving five migrant labourers dead and several others seriously injured. The tragic incident occurred around mid-morning, sending shockwaves through the quiet rural belt of Lambi.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Jaspal Singh, the factory was operating in a two-storey building when the blast occurred. Emergency teams were immediately rushed to the scene as local residents reported hearing a loud explosion followed by thick smoke. While the exact number of injured is yet to be confirmed, several workers were reportedly trapped under debris and were later rescued by local authorities.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Authorities have cordoned off the site and initiated a forensic examination. Local officials have promised strict action if any safety violations are found. The state government has expressed condolences to the victims’ families and announced ex gratia relief for the deceased and injured.
