Telangana Urges Centre to Approve Use of 1,500 TMC Water for Statewide Irrigation Push

In a major push to address irrigation challenges and ensure agricultural sustainability, the Telangana government has formally sought the Union government’s approval to utilize 1,500 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water from the Godavari and Krishna rivers. This request was presented during a high-level meeting held at Shram Shakti Bhavan in New Delhi, where Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy met with Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil, Water Resources Secretary Debashree Mukherjee, and other senior officials. The delegation emphasized the urgent need for water allocation to enhance irrigation capacity across the state.

The Telangana leaders specifically requested a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from both the Union Ministry and the Andhra Pradesh government. Of the total 1,500 TMC sought, 1,000 TMC would be drawn from the Godavari River and 500 TMC from the Krishna River. According to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, this move could revolutionize Telangana’s agricultural infrastructure, enabling irrigation for approximately 1.5 crore acres of farmland. The officials stressed that efficient and equitable distribution of water is not only essential for Telangana’s agrarian economy but also a matter of inter-state fairness and developmental equity.

The state’s plea comes at a time when inter-state water sharing continues to remain a sensitive issue, especially between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Telangana’s push for large-scale irrigation through enhanced river water access is expected to play a pivotal role in food security, rural employment, and long-term climate resilience. As the proposal awaits the Union government’s response, political analysts and agricultural experts alike are closely watching how this appeal could shape future river water agreements in southern India.
