Sonam Wangchuk to Embark on 28-Day Fast from August 15 for Ladakh’s Statehood and Constitutional Protection

Renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has announced a 28-day fast starting on August 15, 2024, if the Indian government fails to engage in talks regarding Ladakh’s statehood and constitutional protection. Wangchuk, who previously undertook a 21-day fast in March, seeks to include Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to safeguard its ecological integrity. The Apex Body, Leh (ABL), and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have submitted a memorandum of demands to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the urgent need for legislative autonomy and protection from industrial exploitation.

Wangchuk highlighted the historical neglect faced by the Buddhist-dominated Leh district under Jammu and Kashmir’s administration, advocating for greater self-governance through Autonomous District Councils (ADCs). These councils, if granted, would have legislative, judicial, and administrative powers to manage local affairs, including education and healthcare, thereby addressing the unique needs of Ladakh’s population.

The proposed inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule aims to preserve its cultural and environmental heritage while ensuring local communities have a say in their governance. Wangchuk assured that these measures would not compromise national security or defense projects in the region.
