Shubman Gill Takes Over as India’s New ODI Captain for Australia Tour; Rohit, Kohli Retained in Squad

In a major leadership reshuffle, opener Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new ODI captain for the upcoming tour of Australia, replacing senior star Rohit Sharma. The announcement marks a symbolic transition in Indian cricket, with the selectors balancing youthful leadership and experienced guidance. Both Rohit and Virat Kohli remain part of the 15-member squad, ensuring stability during this new phase. Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain, signalling his growing importance in India’s white-ball setup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that the decision was made to gradually hand over responsibilities to the next generation while maintaining continuity through senior players. The ODI leg, scheduled between October 19 and 25, will be played in Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne, followed by a five-match T20 series. Pace ace Jasprit Bumrah has been rested to manage his workload, while Yashasvi Jaiswal has earned a recall after a string of consistent performances in T20 internationals.

The full ODI squad includes Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (VC), KL Rahul (WK), Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (WK), and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Team India’s leadership shuffle hints at a new era — one that merges fresh energy with the experience of proven match-winners as the Men in Blue gear up for yet another high-stakes Australian challenge.
