Sheikh Hasina Alleges Assassination Plot After Ouster, Says She ‘Escaped Death by 20 Minutes’

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has revealed details of an alleged assassination attempt on her and her sister Sheikh Rehana after her removal from power. In an emotional audio message posted on the Bangladesh Awami League’s Facebook page, Hasina claimed she narrowly escaped death by just 20-25 minutes. Reflecting on her political struggles, Hasina described surviving previous attempts on her life, including the 2004 grenade attack and a 2000 bomb plot, as acts of divine intervention.

Hasina was ousted in 2024 following a student-led revolution that resulted in her exile to India. She alleged a coordinated conspiracy to eliminate her, referring to a recent threat on August 5, 2024. Amid ongoing scrutiny, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal has issued arrest warrants against her for alleged enforced disappearances during her tenure, claiming over 500 abductions. The Bangladesh government has requested her extradition from India while revoking her passport, intensifying the pressure on the former leader.

Despite the challenges, Hasina maintains her defiance, attributing her survival to Allah’s mercy. She called for justice and resilience, stating, “Although I am without my country and my home, I believe Allah’s mercy has kept me alive for a reason.” Her fate remains uncertain as Bangladesh builds international pressure for her trial, while critics debate her legacy and the political turmoil surrounding her ousting.
