Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for an official visit to India, marking a significant moment in India-Russia relations. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed that preparations are underway, though the exact dates have not yet been disclosed. This visit follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Russia after securing his third consecutive term. It will be Putin’s first visit to India since the Ukraine war began in 2022 and is expected to bolster trade, economic cooperation, and geopolitical ties between the two nations.
India and Russia have been working toward expanding bilateral trade, setting an ambitious target of over $100 billion annually. Key infrastructure projects, such as the Chennai-Vladivostok maritime trade corridor, are being developed to facilitate smoother trade between the two countries. Currently, India-Russia trade stands at around $60 billion, and both sides are keen on deepening their strategic cooperation across multiple sectors, including energy, defense, and technology. Putin’s visit will also focus on his 2030 economic roadmap, which aims to redefine Russia’s global partnerships.
Lavrov emphasized that Moscow views its relationship with New Delhi as a “special and privileged strategic partnership.” In a recent message to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, Putin reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening cooperation across various domains, ensuring that both countries benefit from a fair and multipolar global order. His visit is expected to lay the groundwork for deeper engagement between the two nations, particularly in trade, security, and diplomatic coordination on global issues.
