A tragic incident unfolded in Narayanpet town on Saturday, September 6, when a 45-year-old man named Shekhar collapsed while dancing during the Ganesh Shobha Yatra. Witnesses reported that he suddenly fell unconscious amidst the festive beats and celebration. Narayanpet Sub-Inspector Venkateswarlu immediately rushed to his aid, performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) before shifting him to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts, doctors declared Shekhar dead on arrival, sending shockwaves through the community participating in the procession.
The festivities in Narayanpet were already tense due to disagreements among local Ganesh pandal organizers regarding immersion schedules. While most groups agreed to complete the immersion on Friday, the Bala Hanuman Youth Association insisted on immersing their 35-foot idol only on Saturday. These differences had sparked heated arguments during a meeting chaired by Kosgi SI Vijay Kumar earlier in the week. By Friday night, tensions escalated when other pandals attempted to immerse the larger idol, leading to a standoff between organisers and law enforcement.
To prevent the situation from spiraling further, special police forces were deployed to the area. The clashes forced authorities to resort to lathi-charge, during which several people sustained injuries. Deputy Superintendent of Police Lingaiah arrived at the scene to take stock of the situation and restore order. The sudden death of Shekhar amid the Ganesh festivities added a somber note to what was meant to be a joyous religious celebration, highlighting both the fragility of life and the importance of maintaining harmony during large public events.
