A massive fire broke out early Saturday morning in a multi-storey building on Ezra Street in central Kolkata, triggering a large-scale emergency response as thick smoke engulfed the congested commercial area. The blaze reportedly started around 5:30 am inside an electronics goods warehouse and rapidly spread through adjoining storage units, making firefighting efforts increasingly difficult. Witnesses described heavy smoke pouring out of the upper floors as teams rushed to secure the surrounding lanes and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.
Despite deploying at least 20 fire tenders, firefighters struggled to gain control of the flames even six hours after operations began. Officials from the West Bengal Fire Services said teams immediately launched interior and exterior suppression efforts, but the dense layout of the building and the presence of large quantities of flammable electronic materials intensified the blaze. Emergency personnel cordoned off the area as a precaution, while power connections to parts of the locality were temporarily cut to ensure safe operations.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported, and no individuals were trapped inside the building at the time of the incident. Preliminary observations suggest that tightly packed inventory and electrical equipment may have contributed to the rapid spread, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Fire Services officials said monitoring is ongoing and additional resources are on standby as efforts continue to fully extinguish the fire and assess structural damage.
