Maharashtra Minister Warns Kunal Kamra Over ‘Gaddar’ Joke, Comedian Refuses to Apologize

A political storm has erupted in Maharashtra after comedian Kunal Kamra’s joke referring to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as “gaddar” triggered a strong reaction from the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction). State minister Raghunath Patil issued a stern warning, stating that if Kamra does not apologize, the Shiv Sena will “show its real form.” Patil’s remarks hinted at possible repercussions, emphasizing that the party would not tolerate such an “insult.” His statement, “If he doesn’t apologize, he will come out, where will he hide?” sparked concerns over threats to free speech and the growing intolerance toward political satire. Meanwhile, Kamra remains defiant, making it clear that he will not back down despite the warnings from Shiv Sena leaders.

In response to the controversy, Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar defended Kamra, arguing that criticism should be met with democratic dialogue rather than intimidation. He pointed out the hypocrisy of the ruling party, questioning why similar remarks from actress Kangana Ranaut were defended under the banner of free speech while Kamra’s joke is being treated as a serious offense. “If something is wrong, take legal action. Vandalism and suppression of voices are unacceptable. The government should be able to handle criticism,” Wadettiwar stated. He also warned that such heavy-handed responses could backfire, eroding public trust in the government. His remarks added fuel to the ongoing debate over the limits of free expression in India, particularly in the face of political sensitivities.

Despite mounting pressure, Kamra remains steadfast in his stance. He reiterated that his comment was merely a repetition of what Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had previously said about Shinde. The comedian dismissed the threats, stating, “I don’t fear this mob, and I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down.” Kamra’s refusal to apologize has now turned the incident into a broader debate on the state of free speech in India. While political figures continue to take sides, the incident raises concerns about the increasing use of threats and intimidation to silence critics, setting a troubling precedent for comedians, journalists, and dissenting voices.
