Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah triggered a political storm after making controversial and derogatory comments against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi during a public address in Indore’s Ramkunda village. Referring to Operation Sindoor—a military offensive against terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan—Mr. Shah made remarks suggesting that PM Modi sent “their sister” to avenge the deaths of Hindu victims, an apparent reference to Col. Qureshi. His language, perceived as communal and sexist, drew sharp condemnation from political leaders and civil society alike.
In response to the widespread criticism, Shah later issued a partial apology, stating that Col. Sofiya had brought pride to the country by rising above religion and caste, and that he would apologize “ten times” if his words hurt anyone. However, the damage was already done. While Madhya Pradesh BJP chief V.D. Sharma claimed that the party had taken cognizance and warned the minister, he avoided confirming whether disciplinary action would follow. The National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar also denounced the remarks as “derogatory and unacceptable,” emphasizing the need for respectful discourse towards women serving in the Armed Forces.
Support for Col. Qureshi poured in from across the political spectrum, with many hailing her as a national hero who demonstrated exemplary courage and leadership. Social media users and women’s rights organizations demanded stronger action against Shah, calling the BJP’s warning inadequate. Amid rising public pressure, it remains to be seen whether the party will pursue formal action against the minister or let the controversy fade with time.
