In a deeply disturbing incident, a 24-year-old female law student was allegedly gang-raped inside the premises of a reputed law college in south Kolkata. The crime reportedly took place inside the guard room of the institution. According to the victim’s statement, the accused not only sexually assaulted her but also recorded videos of the act and later used them to issue threats, attempting to silence her. The survivor’s complaint led to swift police action in what is being seen as another shocking instance of campus-based sexual violence in the state.
Police have arrested three individuals in connection with the case — two of them current students and one a staff member of the college. Among the accused is Monojit Mishra, a former student and a prominent leader of the student wing of the ruling Trinamool Congress. All three were produced before a local court on Thursday and have been remanded to five days of police custody. Authorities say more arrests may follow as the investigation progresses, especially if additional footage or digital evidence emerges.
The incident has sparked outrage across Kolkata, with opposition parties and student bodies demanding strict action against the perpetrators and questioning the law and order situation on campuses. This case comes barely six months after the infamous RG Kar Medical College rape case, which triggered widespread protests and criticism of institutional apathy. Civil society groups have once again called for enhanced security in educational institutions and the need for swift judicial processes to bring justice to survivors of sexual violence.
