Kharge’s ‘Sherwani, Biryani, Pareshani’ Comment on Hyderabad Triggers Political Storm

A remark by Mallikarjun Kharge, president of the Indian National Congress, has ignited sharp political reactions after a video surfaced showing him cautioning party leaders against allowing what he described as the “Hyderabadi problem” to enter Uttar Pradesh politics. In the clip, recorded within the Parliament premises, Kharge is heard telling Congress MP Imran Masood that Hyderabad is known for “Sherwani, Biryani, and Pareshani.” The statement quickly went viral, drawing mixed interpretations and intense debate across social media platforms.

The comments have led to speculation that the reference was indirectly aimed at Asaduddin Owaisi, leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen. Although the Congress and AIMIM contest elections independently in Telangana, their political equations have occasionally drawn scrutiny, particularly during specific by-elections and Assembly issues. Observers point out that while no formal alliance exists, moments of indirect cooperation in past electoral contests have fueled speculation about underlying understandings between the two parties.

Reacting strongly, the Bharatiya Janata Party accused Kharge of insulting the people of Hyderabad. BJP spokesperson NV Subhash termed the remarks derogatory and alleged that reducing the city to cultural symbols and “pareshani” was disrespectful. The controversy has since evolved beyond a single comment, turning into a broader political confrontation, with rival parties using the episode to question each other’s intent, alliances, and commitment to regional pride.
