Karnataka Government Approves Renaming of Ramanagara District to Bengaluru South

In a notable development, the Karnataka state cabinet has decided to rename Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, following a proposal from Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar submitted the proposal earlier this month, emphasizing the advantages of associating Ramanagara district with the globally recognized city of Bengaluru. The proposal suggested that such a renaming could bring greater recognition and opportunities to the district.

State Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil confirmed the decision post the cabinet meeting. Patil explained that the renaming was driven by local residents’ demands. “We have decided to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South. It is based on the demand of the people there. The Revenue Department will start the process,” Patil stated. He also clarified that the renaming would only change the district’s name, with no alterations to its administrative and structural setup.

Ramanagara district comprises five taluks: Ramanagara, Channapatna, Magadi, Kanakapura, and Harohalli. The renaming aims to help these taluks benefit from Bengaluru’s international reputation. In his proposal, Shivakumar highlighted that the new name would attract more development and investment, enhancing local infrastructure and growth.

The association with Bengaluru, a major economic and technological hub, is expected to provide a boost to the district’s visibility and attractiveness. By aligning with Bengaluru, the district aims to draw more attention and resources, ultimately benefiting its residents and business.

The Revenue Department will handle the formal renaming process, ensuring that all necessary administrative procedures are followed. The decision has been well-received by many, who view it as a positive step toward integrating the district more closely with Bengaluru’s dynamic growth and opportunities.

Overall, the renaming of Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South reflects the Karnataka government’s strategic approach to regional development. The move aims to leverage Bengaluru’s global recognition to foster growth and development in the district, benefiting the local population.
