Indian Youth Detained, Handcuffed at Newark Airport for Illegal Entry into the US

A dramatic video circulating on social media has drawn widespread attention in India, showing an Indian youth being wrestled to the ground and handcuffed by security personnel at Newark Airport in New Jersey. The video, filmed by a non-resident Indian and shared online on June 8, triggered strong reactions as it depicted the man being forcefully detained during a layover. According to sources familiar with the matter, the individual had illegally entered the United States without a valid visa and was intercepted during his transit through Newark.

Authorities confirmed that the young man hails from Haryana and had entered the US without proper documentation. The Indian Consulate in New York verified his identity and stated that he is being deported in compliance with a court order. Officials noted that while transiting, his behavior was found to be disruptive, prompting security forces to physically restrain him. He has since been admitted to a medical facility, and deportation procedures will resume once he is declared fit to travel. Indian officials continue to engage with US authorities to monitor the situation.

The US Embassy in New Delhi issued a general statement on social media, without naming the individual, reiterating that illegal entry and visa abuse will not be tolerated. “There is no right to visit the United States. We cannot and will not tolerate illegal entry, abuse of visas, or the violation of US law,” the statement read. While the US maintains its policy of welcoming legitimate travelers, this incident has reignited discussions in India around risky migration routes, the role of visa facilitators, and the treatment of undocumented migrants abroad.
