Indian Army Chief Empowers Western Commanders to Respond Strongly to Ceasefire Violations

In a decisive move following recent tensions, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has authorized all Army Commanders along the western border to initiate countermeasures if Pakistan violates the ceasefire agreement. The directive comes in the wake of ceasefire and airspace violations reported during the night of May 10–11, 2025. The government of India has reinforced its stance, warning that any breach of the bilateral understanding reached through DGMO-level talks will be met with a “kinetic response,” signaling a robust military reply rather than diplomatic restraint.

The Army, in its official statement, emphasized the seriousness of the situation and the Chief of Army Staff’s (COAS) firm approach to ensuring border security. “The COAS has granted full authority to the Army Commanders for counteraction in the kinetic domain to any violation of the understanding reached via the DGMO talks,” the statement read. General Dwivedi conducted a comprehensive review of the security scenario with top Army officials along the western front, following the violations. This move is being seen as a green light for proactive defensive measures to deter future infractions.

The Indian Army’s proactive stance underscores a broader strategy to maintain territorial integrity while maintaining the sanctity of the ceasefire agreement. The developments have sparked heightened alertness across forward positions and monitoring systems. As the region braces for possible escalations, experts suggest that this policy shift reflects India’s zero-tolerance approach toward border provocations. The Army’s official handle on X shared details of Operation Sindoor, reflecting the military’s preparedness to act swiftly in defense of national interests.
