In a determined move to safeguard the city’s infrastructure and prevent seasonal disasters, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) launched a large-scale demolition drive in the Habib Nagar area of Kukatpally on Friday. This targeted operation was aimed at dismantling illegal constructions built along a crucial nala (drain) that had been causing obstruction to natural water flow. Conducted under strict police supervision, the operation ensured the safe removal of multiple unauthorized structures that posed a serious flooding risk during the monsoon season.
The HMDA’s action is part of a broader citywide initiative to restore drainage systems and reduce the increasing instances of waterlogging and urban flooding in Hyderabad. In conjunction with the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Authority (HYDRAA), similar operations have recently been executed in Saidabad and Krishna Nagar, where illegal encroachments over drainage lines were also razed. Officials stated that these structures had become major contributors to the stagnation of water and potential backflow into residential areas during heavy rainfall.
As Hyderabad continues to grapple with the effects of rapid urbanization, authorities are ramping up efforts to reclaim natural water channels and protect civic infrastructure. The anti-encroachment drive not only aims to enhance flood resilience but also serves as a strong warning to those illegally occupying government land. With the monsoon season in full swing, the city’s development bodies are expected to carry out more such operations in vulnerable areas, reinforcing their commitment to sustainable urban planning and disaster preparedness.
