Hyderabad, August 4, 2024: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Balanagar SWOT police have seized 800 kilograms of ganja on the Outer Ring Road at Golconda in Hyderabad. The consignment was en route to Gachibowli from Pedda Amberpet on the outskirts of the city. The ganja was being supplied from Odisha in a container, and the police have taken the driver into custody.
According to Cyberabad SOT DCP Srinivas, five individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, and they will be interrogated further. The police suspect that more individuals involved in the network may be arrested soon. This is the first time that cannabis has been transported in a container in Hyderabad.
The DCP disclosed that the value of the seized ganja is estimated at Rs 2.80 crore. The police revealed that the contraband was being transported from Odisha to Maharashtra. A man identified as Ramu from Araku in Andhra Pradesh has been identified as the key suspect in the supply chain.
Another suspect, Somnath from Balimela in Odisha, is believed to have acted as a commission agent, earning Rs 3 lakh for each trip transporting ganja. However, the receiver, Maruti Patel from Maharashtra, is currently absconding and will be arrested soon, according to the police.
The police stated that after receiving the cannabis in Maharashtra, Maruti used to distribute it to users within the state as well as in Karnataka. Along with the main accused Ramu, another man identified as Suresh is also absconding and being pursued by law enforcement.
This seizure underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in combating drug trafficking in the region. The police are intensifying their efforts to track down and dismantle the entire network responsible for this large-scale operation. They have called for increased public cooperation and vigilance to help identify and report suspicious activities.
