Hyderabad and its neighboring districts—Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy—were jolted awake on Thursday by intense thunderstorms, strong gusty winds, and overcast skies. The India Meteorological Department recorded widespread lightning activity and rainfall that began late Wednesday night and continued into the early hours of Thursday. Several districts across Telangana experienced substantial precipitation, with Sangareddy’s Kohir receiving the highest at 94.3 mm, followed by Tekmal in Medak with 89.5 mm, Chandampet in Nalgonda with 80 mm, and Kadthal in Rangareddy logging 69.5 mm.
In Hyderabad, short yet intense thunderstorm episodes lasting 20–25 minutes were reported in areas such as Rajendranagar, Attapur, Charminar, Aramghar, Chandrayangutta, Mehdipatnam, and Tolichowki. Localities in western Hyderabad including Shaikpet, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Gachibowli, and Narsingi experienced brief downpours followed by cloudy and windy conditions. Eastern parts like Secunderabad, Trimulgherry, Dr A S Rao Nagar, Kapra, ECIL, and Marredpally also witnessed moderate rainfall with accompanying thunder.
Among Hyderabad’s rain-hit pockets, the DEO Office and BHEL Factory areas in Ramachandrapuram registered rainfall up to 44 mm and 35.5 mm respectively. Mailardevpally and Rajendranagar each received 33.5 mm. Kishanbagh in Bahadurpura logged 20.8 mm, while Chandanagar’s PJR Stadium recorded 18.5 mm. MMTS Lingampally saw 16.8 mm of rainfall, and areas such as Patancheru, Sivarampalle, and Chandulal Baradari also recorded significant precipitation. Authorities have urged residents to stay alert, especially in low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
