Heavy rain in Delhi’s Kalkaji area turned tragic on Thursday when a large tree came crashing down on a moving bike, killing one person and injuring two others. The impact also damaged a nearby vehicle. The incident occurred as the city was already grappling with severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions caused by relentless downpours ahead of Independence Day. Authorities rushed to the spot to clear the debris, while the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The heavy rains did not spare other parts of the city either. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Delhi, warning of more intense showers in the coming hours. Key stretches across the national capital were submerged, and several underpasses were flooded, making commuting extremely difficult. Despite the chaos on the roads, the Indira Gandhi International Airport reported that flight operations remained unaffected, with authorities monitoring the situation closely.
According to IMD data, Delhi’s primary weather station at Safdarjung recorded 13.1 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, while Aya Nagar reported 57.4 mm, Palam 49.4 mm, Lodhi Road 12 mm, Pragati Maidan 9 mm, and Pusa 5 mm. The showers brought Delhi’s minimum temperature down to 23.6°C, which is 3.2 degrees below the seasonal average. However, the pleasant drop in temperature was overshadowed by the accidents, waterlogging, and damage caused across the city.
