New Delhi: A fresh controversy has emerged in Maharashtra after Tantrapeethadhishwar Aniket Shastri Maharaj of Trimbakeshwar demanded the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, citing his historical actions against Hindus, particularly the Marathas. Shastri Maharaj, in his speech, strongly condemned Aurangzeb’s rule, calling him a “cruel oppressor” responsible for the suffering of King Sambhaji Maharaj and other Hindu leaders. He urged the Maharashtra government to take immediate action, insisting that the tomb has no place in the state. His remarks have reignited historical debates and led to strong reactions from various communities.
The demand has found support from right-wing organizations like Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad, who argue that commemorating a ruler known for his oppressive policies is an insult to Maharashtra’s history. Shastri Maharaj also warned that if the government does not act, followers of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Dharmveer Sambhaji Maharaj would intensify their protests. His statements have triggered a heated political and social debate, with some backing the demand for removal while others see it as an unnecessary attempt to rewrite history. Critics argue that targeting historical monuments based on past events could set a dangerous precedent, leading to further tensions in the state.
The Maharashtra government has yet to respond officially to the demand, but security has been heightened around Aurangzeb’s tomb to prevent any disturbances. The issue has also sparked discussions on social media, with many questioning whether removing historical sites serves any real purpose or simply fuels political agendas. Some users pointed out that India’s heritage includes both its triumphs and struggles, and erasing history is not a solution. Meanwhile, political analysts believe this controversy could be used to stir sentiments ahead of elections, further polarizing communities. As the debate continues to escalate, all eyes are now on the Maharashtra government’s next move.
