Atishi Becomes First Woman Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly

In a historic move, AAP MLA and former Chief Minister Atishi has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly. This marks the first time a woman will hold the position, facing off against BJP’s Rekha Gupta, who recently became the state’s first female Chief Minister. Atishi, who briefly served as Delhi’s youngest Chief Minister in 2024, has been a prominent face in AAP, handling key portfolios like Education, Power, and Water during the previous government. Her appointment signals AAP’s intent to play a strong opposition role after losing power in the recent elections.

Announcing her selection, senior AAP leader Gopal Rai stated that the decision was taken unanimously in the party’s legislative meeting. He praised Atishi’s leadership during challenging times and emphasized that AAP will hold the BJP government accountable. Atishi, in her address, reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring that the ruling party delivers on its promises, particularly to women. She highlighted BJP’s pledge of providing ₹2,500 to women and vowed that AAP would press the government to fulfill its commitments.

The BJP secured a resounding victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP managed to secure only 22. The Congress failed to make a mark, not winning a single seat. With this shift in power, Atishi’s leadership as LoP is expected to shape the political landscape in Delhi as AAP transitions from governance to opposition, aiming to challenge BJP’s policies and decisions in the Assembly.
