Assam Police Arrests USTM Founder Mahbubul Hoque Amid Allegations of Political Vendetta

Mahbubul Hoque, the founder of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), was arrested from his Guwahati residence early Friday morning by Assam Police. His arrest follows a series of allegations and hate campaigns led by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has accused Hoque and his institution of misconduct, including the controversial claim of ‘flood jihad.’ Police have stated that the arrest is related to an alleged ‘law and order situation’ during the Class 12 physics examination at the Central Public School in Patharkandi, a school run by the Education and Research Development (ERD) Foundation, which was established by Hoque. The Assam CM has also claimed that Hoque promised students higher marks in their CBSE examinations, prompting a police inquiry into the matter.

The arrest has sparked widespread criticism, with many viewing it as a politically motivated action against a prominent Muslim educationist. Congress leader Dr. Maskoor Usmani condemned the move, stating that it was the culmination of months of targeted attacks by the Assam CM, aimed at undermining a prestigious NAAC-A Grade institution that falls under the jurisdiction of Meghalaya and adheres to UGC regulations. Former Lok Sabha MP Abdul Khaleque also voiced his disapproval, emphasizing that the arrest was carried out in the middle of the night and appeared to be part of a prolonged campaign of public criticism against Hoque by the Assam government. Critics argue that this is another instance of the Assam government targeting Muslim leaders and institutions under the guise of legal action.

The developments surrounding Hoque’s arrest have intensified political tensions in Assam, with opposition leaders questioning the legitimacy of the charges against him. Many are demanding his immediate release, calling for an impartial inquiry free from political interference. The case also raises concerns about academic freedom, as Hoque’s USTM has been a reputed institution contributing significantly to higher education in the region. With the Assam government doubling down on its stance, the controversy is expected to fuel further debates on the intersection of politics and governance in Assam’s education sector.
