INDIA Bloc Stages Fierce Protest Against Electoral Roll Overhaul in Parliament Premises

In a dramatic show of resistance, MPs from the INDIA alliance — including prominent faces from Congress, DMK, TMC, RJD, and Left parties — staged a powerful protest on the steps of Parliament’s Makar Dwar, denouncing the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. With placards bearing slogans like “Vote ki chori bandh karo” and “SIR wapas lo,” the Opposition alleged that the revision exercise is a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise voters ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. The protest took place just before the day’s proceedings during the ongoing Monsoon session of Parliament in New Delhi.

Key leaders such as Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, DMK MP Kanimozhi, Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav, and TMC’s Derek O’Brien stood united in opposition, accusing the Election Commission of colluding with the central government. Protesters carried placards reading “Stop Vote Loot” and raised questions over the impartiality of the voter roll process. The leaders demanded an immediate rollback of the SIR and called for a full-fledged discussion in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

The Opposition has maintained consistent pressure throughout the Monsoon session, protesting daily within the Parliament complex. Their primary contention is that the SIR exercise unfairly targets sections of the population, potentially manipulating the electoral base before the high-stakes Bihar polls. As the Supreme Court is also set to hear related petitions next Monday, the protest is expected to intensify, with INDIA bloc leaders promising to defend what they call the “sanctity of the vote.”
