Monsoon Boosts Osman & Himayat Sagar Levels: Hyderabad Authorities on Alert as Inflows Rise

As the monsoon gains momentum across Telangana, Hyderabad’s twin reservoirs—Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar—are witnessing steady inflows. Although both water bodies are yet to touch their Full Tank Level (FTL), they are nearing capacity with rainfall continuing in the catchment areas. As of 8:00 am on Sunday, July 20, Osman Sagar reached 1782.80 feet against its FTL of 1790.00 feet, storing 2.474 TMC of water with 370 cusecs inflow. Meanwhile, Himayat Sagar stood at 1759.15 feet (FTL: 1763.50 feet), holding 2.164 TMC with 200 cusecs of inflow. Both reservoirs remain stable, with no current outflows and all gates closed.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has issued a public safety advisory in view of persistent rain. Citizens have been advised to avoid travel unless necessary, especially in waterlogged or low-lying zones. GHMC has also urged residents to stay away from open drains, manholes, and weak structures like old walls or trees. In the interest of safety, they’ve recommended not parking vehicles under vulnerable structures and being prepared with emergency contact numbers and supplies. Emergency services can be reached via HYDRAA Control Room (040-29555500 / 9000113667) and ICCC Control Room (8712674000).

With the India Meteorological Department predicting further monsoon activity in the coming days, civic officials and disaster teams are keeping a close watch on water levels and urban drainage systems. The reservoirs play a vital role in Hyderabad’s flood control and drinking water supply. While the rising inflows are a relief to areas suffering borewell depletion, they also raise concerns about possible overflow scenarios. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official bulletins and avoid spreading unverified information online.
