Medical Aircraft Crashes After Takeoff in London, Pilot Dead and Airport Shut Down

A tragic aviation accident unfolded at London Southend Airport on Sunday afternoon when a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, operated by Dutch medevac company Zeusch Aviation, crashed just seconds after takeoff. The aircraft, configured for patient transport and operating flight SUZ1 to Lelystad, Netherlands, erupted into a massive fireball after it sharply banked left, nearly inverted, and plunged nose-first into the ground. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion and seeing thick smoke rising as emergency teams rushed to the scene. Sadly, the sole occupant—the pilot—was killed in the crash.

Emergency services, including Essex Police, fire brigades, ambulance units, and air rescue teams, responded promptly to the disaster. Precautionary evacuations were carried out in surrounding locations, such as Rochford Hundred Golf Club and Westcliff Rugby Club, due to the intensity of the fire. Authorities have launched a full investigation involving the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) and other aviation bodies to determine the cause of the crash. The aircraft had earlier flown from Athens to Pula and then to Southend before its final ill-fated takeoff.

London Southend Airport has been temporarily closed, with all operations suspended until further notice. Airlines including EasyJet have begun rerouting or cancelling flights, assisting stranded passengers with rebooking and accommodations. While the aircraft was fitted with medical systems, officials have not yet confirmed whether a patient was onboard at the time. Local MP David Burton-Sampson urged residents to avoid the area to allow uninterrupted emergency response operations. As investigations continue, aviation authorities remain focused on examining mechanical or operational failures that could have led to the deadly crash.
