Communal Tensions Escalate in Ujjain as Slippers, Cow Dung Thrown at Shahi Masjid During Rath Yatra

Tensions erupted in the holy city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, late on June 27 during the Khati Samaj’s Jagannath Rath Yatra, when unidentified miscreants from the crowd allegedly hurled slippers, shoes, and cow dung cakes at the historic Shahi Masjid located at Chhatri Chowk. The deeply provocative act was captured on video and widely circulated across social media platforms, sparking outrage and condemnation from civil society, religious groups, and political figures alike. The viral clips show clear attempts to incite communal disharmony, prompting widespread calls for immediate action.

Following the incident, a local resident, Abrar Ahmed, lodged a formal complaint with the Kharak Kuan police station. An FIR was registered under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, which pertains to intentional and malicious acts meant to outrage religious sentiments. Despite the seriousness of the allegations, authorities have yet to make any arrests. Police officials stated that they are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the Chhatri Chowk area to identify those responsible. “We are investigating the matter and will take appropriate legal action against the culprits,” assured SHO Rajkumar Malviya.

While police have claimed that the law and order situation in Ujjain is under control, the incident has left the local Muslim community in shock and distress. Activists and community leaders have urged the administration to act swiftly to prevent further unrest. The attack on the Shahi Masjid, a place of worship and cultural heritage, has added to growing concerns about communal polarization during religious processions. As investigations continue, the public and rights groups remain vigilant, demanding accountability and justice in what is being widely condemned as a targeted hate act.
