PM Modi Inaugurates India’s First Vertical-Lift Sea Bridge in Tamil Nadu; Stalin Skips Ceremony

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, April 6, inaugurated the newly constructed Pamban sea bridge in Tamil Nadu, which connects Rameswaram island to the mainland. This engineering marvel, built at a cost of over ₹550 crore, is India’s first vertical-lift railway sea bridge. It replaces the historic 1914 Pamban Bridge and boasts a 72.5-meter lift span that rises 17 meters to allow smooth passage for ships. With a total length of 2.08 kilometers, the bridge comprises 99 spans and utilizes cutting-edge features like stainless steel reinforcement, fully welded joints, and corrosion-resistant paint, ensuring durability in the challenging marine environment.

Despite the significance of the event, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin was notably absent, citing prior official engagements in Udhagamandalam. Stalin, however, used the opportunity to reiterate concerns over the proposed delimitation exercise and urged the Prime Minister to address Tamil Nadu’s apprehensions on the matter. Meanwhile, PM Modi also flagged off a new train service between Rameswaram and Tambaram and a Coast Guard ship, which passed beneath the newly commissioned bridge. Southern Railway announced that several trains will now originate and terminate at Rameswaram, thanks to this improved connectivity.

The construction of the bridge faced significant challenges due to the turbulent waters of the Palk Strait, harsh weather conditions, and the region’s vulnerability to cyclones and seismic activity. Yet, engineers overcame these hurdles to deliver a robust structure supported by 333 piles and 101 piers. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, and other key dignitaries were present at the event. Officials hailed the bridge as a technological leap on par with global icons like London’s Tower Bridge and the Oresund Bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden, marking a new chapter in India’s coastal infrastructure.
